Self Thought Health

A regular person's journey to understanding health

About

Hi and welcome to Self Thought Health!

My name is Bianca Aguglia and I’m the owner of and writer for this website. I’m not a health expert. In fact, I’m the exact opposite of health expert: I’m a health confused regular person with no formal education in the medical field.

I can’t change the part about formal education. At the time of this writing, I’m forty-one years old. I don’t want to go back to school for the many years it takes to get a medical degree. Not now, anyway. But I can change the parts about being confused and being educated.

In his book How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease, Michael Greger, M.D. gives two worrisome pieces of news:

  1. Six out of seven graduating doctor feel that physicians are inadequately trained to give patients advice about their diets.
  2. Some studies have shown that people off the street sometimes know more about basic nutrition than their doctors. *

Keep in mind that nutrition is considered a critical factor in premature death and disability. Shouldn’t doctors have advanced training in the field? They should, of course, but that’s not the case. How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease (published in 2015) says that 75% medical schools don’t offer a single course in nutrition. Now, I don’t know if that statistic is true. And that bothers me. I hear so much conflicting information, I have a hard time sorting it out.

That’s what this blog is for.

I want to educate myself. I want to take charge of my health. I consider myself lucky to have been in relatively good shape for the first four decades of my life. But I’m starting to feel my age a little. So I want to start taking better care of myself. To improve my health in a researched, critically-thought, non-obsessive way.

As I do so, I’ll share my journey here. Please remember that I’m not a health professional and I can’t give you any advice. But maybe this website can spark ideas for your own research. At the very least, it will make you feel less isolated in your quest to educate yourself and try to understand a little more about this field that’s fascinating in its potential and scary in its downsides: medicine.

Thank you for being here. I wish you the best of health.
